Our town worked hard to earn the nickname “Pittsburgh of the South.” I’ll pay homage to the iron industry tomorrow night by witnessing (and participating in) an iron pour at Sloss Furnaces. After a tour of the furnaces, they’re going to let us all cast something myself. I hope the gloves are really thick.

The event is sponsored by the Birmingham Museum of Art‘s Junior Patrons program. 5:30 to 8:30 at Sloss Furnace. $8 for Junior Patrons, $12 otherwise. More info here.

I’m sad to miss this one!

The metal artists will be doing the actual pouring, but we can still stand close enough to feel the heat (and any sparks that might fly our way). A nighttime iron pour can be quite spectacular–hopefully I’ll run into you there.

Thanks for the clarification, Charles. I am glad, in retrospect, that they didn’t let me anywhere near that furnace. Sorry we didn’t get to talk, I love your work.
